What does travel insurance cover?

Expats travel more than most: back to family, for work, and to explore Europe. Good travel insurance makes sure an accident, a cancelled flight or a stolen bag does not turn into a financial problem.

🏥

Medical costs abroad

Doctor's visits, hospital stays and, if needed, medical evacuation or repatriation, so you get proper care wherever you are.

📅

Trip cancellation and interruption

Non-refundable costs are covered if you have to cancel unexpectedly or cut your trip short because of an unforeseen event.

🧳

Baggage and personal belongings

Compensation when your suitcase, phone, laptop or other belongings are lost, stolen or damaged on the way.

📞

24/7 emergency assistance

One emergency number, day and night, for medical emergencies and travel disruptions. Help in English when you need it most.

⏳

Delays and missed connections

Extra accommodation or transport costs after an unexpected delay or a missed connection are compensated.

⚖️

Legal assistance

Run into legal trouble abroad? Travel insurance can provide legal help and cover the associated costs.

Doesn't my Dutch health insurance cover me abroad?

Only partly, and this is the gap most newcomers do not know about. Your Dutch basic health insurance reimburses emergency care abroad, but only up to what the same treatment would cost in the Netherlands.

💶
Care abroad can cost more than the Dutch rateIn countries such as the United States, hospital bills are often far higher than in the Netherlands. The difference is for your own account unless your travel insurance covers medical costs.
🚑
Repatriation is not part of health insuranceTransport back to the Netherlands after an accident or serious illness is arranged and paid through travel insurance.
🏨
Extra stay and travel costsLonger hotel stay because you cannot fly, or a family member who has to come over: these are travel insurance costs.
🧳
Baggage and cancellationYour health insurance never pays for a stolen laptop or a trip you had to cancel.

Exact cover depends on the insurer and the modules you choose. Medical costs and cancellation are often optional add-ons.

Which travel insurance do you need?

Dutch travel insurance is modular: you choose how long, where and what you want to insure. These are the choices that matter.

🔁
Frequent travellers

Annual travel insurance

A continuous policy (doorlopende reisverzekering) covers all your trips during the year. Usually the better deal if you travel more than once or twice a year, which most expats do.

🎫
One trip

Single-trip travel insurance

A short-term policy for one holiday or visit. You are insured from departure until you are back home.

🏰
Region

Europe cover

Sufficient if all your trips stay within Europe. Check which countries your insurer counts as Europe.

🌎
Region

Worldwide cover

Needed for trips outside Europe, including visits to family in the US, Asia, Africa or Latin America.

📅
Add-on

Cancellation cover

Often a separate module. Take it out right after booking, so you are covered if something happens before you leave.

⛷️
Add-on

Winter sports and adventure

Skiing, diving and other risky activities are usually excluded unless you add this module.

Flying home to see family? That is a trip abroad too

Once you live in the Netherlands, a visit to your home country counts as travel. Choose worldwide cover if home is outside Europe, and check the maximum number of days per trip if you tend to stay for weeks at a time.

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance

Is travel insurance mandatory in the Netherlands?

No, but it is strongly recommended. Your Dutch health insurance only reimburses emergency care abroad up to Dutch rates and does not cover repatriation, baggage or cancellation.

Can I take out Dutch travel insurance as an expat?

Yes. In general you need to live in the Netherlands and be registered at a Dutch address. Your nationality does not matter.

Am I covered when I visit my home country?

Yes, from the Netherlands that is a trip abroad. Make sure you have worldwide cover if your home country is outside Europe, and check the maximum number of consecutive days per trip.

Annual or single-trip travel insurance: which is better?

If you travel more than once or twice a year, an annual (continuous) policy is usually cheaper and you never have to think about it again. For one trip a year, single-trip cover can be enough.

Is cancellation included?

Usually not automatically. Cancellation cover is often an optional module. Add it right after you book, because it only covers events that happen after the cover has started.

When should I take out travel insurance?

Before you leave. With an annual policy you are always covered; with single-trip cover, arrange it as soon as your trip is booked.

Does travel insurance cover my family?

You can insure yourself, your partner and your children on one policy. The comparison shows the premium for your household.

Can I arrange everything in English?

Yes. European Insurance specialises in expats in the Netherlands. You can compare and apply online, and our advisors speak English.
